{"url":"https://treescape.app/api/species/mahonia-repens/?format=json","slug":"mahonia-repens","latin_name":"Mahonia repens","description":"Berberis repens commonly known as creeping mahonia, creeping grape holly, or creeping barberry, is a species of Berberis native to most of the western United States and two western provinces of Canada. It is low growing shrub that spreads by underground stems. As a species it is well adapted to fire and is a very common understory plant in western forests. An evergreen species, it provides food to deer and elk in winter and can make up a significant part of their diet. The berries are eaten by birds and small mammals, aiding it in spreading to recently disturbed areas. It has found use as a xeric ornamental plant and has escaped from cultivation in areas beyond its native range.","gbif_id":3033850,"image_thumbnail":"https://treescape.app/media/plant_species/images/thumbnails/mahonia-repens_thumbnail_Lzu7QQs.jpg","image_large":"https://treescape.app/media/plant_species/images/large/mahonia-repens_thumbnail_zmWuxpF.jpg","properties":{"height_maximum":"0.60","height_confidence":"0.9","height_source":"https://treescape.app/api/sources/989/?format=json","width_minimum":"0.10","width_typical":"0.30","width_maximum":"1.00","width_confidence":"0.8","width_source":"https://treescape.app/api/sources/989/?format=json","soil_acidity_minimum":null,"soil_acidity_typical":null,"soil_acidity_maximum":null,"soil_acidity_confidence":null,"soil_acidity_source":null,"climate_zones":[],"growth_habits":["https://treescape.app/api/growthhabits/shrub/?format=json"],"human_uses":["https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/edible-fruits/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/medicinal-bark/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/medicinal-flowers/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/medicinal-leaves/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/medicinal-roots/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/ornamental-bark/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/ornamental-flowers/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/humanuses/ornamental-foliage/?format=json"],"ecological_roles":["https://treescape.app/api/ecologicalroles/habitat-provision/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/ecologicalroles/soil-erosion-control/?format=json"],"soil_preferences":["https://treescape.app/api/soilpreference/sandy/?format=json","https://treescape.app/api/soilpreference/silty/?format=json"],"propagation_methods":[]}}
